SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Scholarships are a type of financial aid awarded to students to be used for financing their post-secondary education. They help defray the cost of college attendance and do not have to be repaid. Scholarships are available from a variety of sources including colleges or universities you plan to attend, major corporations, parents’ employers, internet searches, etc. In addition, local community and county organizations realize the importance of post-secondary education and offer a wide variety of scholarship opportunities to deserving seniors.

Each scholarship opportunity is its own entity with different deadlines, criteria, and supplemental materials to be included for consideration (letters of recommendation, essays, transcript, etc.). Scholarships may be based on financial need, academic or other merit, minority status, religious preference, etc. The quest for scholarships is particularly competitive in this difficult economic time, especially if your ACT score, GPA, class rank and academic course load has not been particularly rigorous.

Although the quest for scholarships is not difficult, it does require a great deal of organization and diligence in order to meet deadlines and maintain files (dates of submission, criteria for each scholarship, date to claim award, follow up contact information, etc.). For that reason, it is extremely important to have some sort of organizational process in place to record the scholarships applied for. For this reason, a Scholarship Application Tracker is included in the Senior Success Guide that all seniors receive in early fall. Additional copies of the form can be printed by clicking the following: Scholarship Application Tracker.

ONLINE SCHOLARSHIP SERVICES

Online scholarship search services can help students locate additional scholarships from other sources. These search services conduct a matching process of the student’s personal profile to the award criteria set by the sponsoring organization of the scholarship. The student profile is a questionnaire requesting information about the student’s background and interests. After registering for an account and creating a personal profile, students will receive a list of scholarships for which they are eligible to apply or have been matched with. They can then review the list to choose the scholarships they want to apply for.

The following links are suggested for scholarship searches:

Letters, emails or websites offering to find scholarships for a fee are not legitimate and typically scams. NEVER pay for help with locating scholarship money.

STATE AND LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Listed below are state and local scholarships that the high school guidance office has information on. Click on the scholarship link to print a copy of an application or open a web site to access an application or complete it online.  Due dates are subject to change so it is important to verify all dates and submit applications on time.

Many applications are mailed directly to the organization, but some of the local scholarship applications must be turned in to the high school guidance office by the deadline. Applications are continually being added and web sites updated so check back on a regular basis. The scholarship list is available as a PDF file so students can print it out and select the scholarships they wish to apply for. Students are reminded to record all scholarships applied for on their Scholarship Application Tracker.

For additional information or questions, please contact Mrs. Helwig, the high school guidance counselor, at 989.635.7425 or jhelwig@marlette.k12.mi.us
